Description
Highlights abounded in the 1982-83 season. Two and three-year-olds, weight-for-age gallopers, sprinters, stayers and jumpers…there was star quality in every section.
And there was a star off the racetrack…that remarkable sire Sir Tristram, shattering all records in the sale ring at Trentham and breaking his own records through his progeny on the racetracks of Australia and New Zealand.
The two-year-olds were a brilliant bunch. Unbeaten Ebony Belle had long-time racegoers struggling to remember a youngster with more pace.
At first it seemed the three-year-olds might be below par, as the early-season classics went in all directions. But the Our Flight began to exert her dominance on the scene, against both sexes, climaxing in her gallant New Zealand Derby win. And after Christmas brilliant McGinty emerged from his injury-enforced hibernation to stamp himself even better at three years than he had been at two years.
Honours were more even among the stayers, with Fountaincourt a giant-killer in the Auckland Cup, Kiwi coming from last to first in the Wellington Cup, bonny mare Maurita an unlucky bridesmaid each time. Clear Gold putting together a splendid sequence of metric-mile wins, Commissionaire stringing them together at weight-for-age…
At season’s end there was that unemotional professional David Peake coming from “well off the pace” to break Bill Skelton’s long-standing record wins in a season.
The 1983 DB Racing Annual (now in its twelfth edition) captures the action of an action-packed season, illustrated by a selection of the year’s best racing photographs.
