Description
‘WHEN Lubin Croft saw the orphaned dolphin for the first time he and his mum Effie had been living in the beach at 0pononi for only a few weeks. Lubin’s dad Adin had caught the TB back in Whangarei, so after he was dead Lubin and Effie had cleared out, once they had buried him.’
However, Adin is not safely buried and the truth about this seemingly virtuous evangelist destroys his wife and adopted son’s attempt at making a fresh start. But their love for him and each other remains constant as they become entangled in a series of bizarre and violent events, along with a young boy called Pita, a tame emu, Effie’s two imaginary friends, and Opo, the orphaned dolphin.
The New Zealand Herald wrote of Virtue’s first novel, The Redemption of Elsdon Bird, ‘Noel Virtue is a New Zealand writer of whom we shall hear much more. Devotees of indigenous fiction who ignore this novel are missing the birth of a great talent.’ This outstanding second novel is a confirmation of this.
Noel Virtue was born in wellington and educated there and in Auckland. For many years he worked as a zookeeper with the London Zoological Society and elsewhere, spending his happiest time as head keeper of the Welsh Mountain Zoo in Colwyn Bay. He recounts these experiences in his book, Among the Animals: A Zookeeper’s Story, published in 1988. Virtue left his z00 career to concentrate on writing. He is currently living in London.
