Description
Dragonmede opens in a gambling house in Victorian London, run by gay, immoral, generous-hearted Luella Rochdale, whose sole ambition is a successful marriage for her daughter Eustacia.
The successful marriage is achieved. Eustacia becomes the wife of Julian Kershaw, heir to Dragonmede, son of Sir Vivian Kershaw, who has lost his power of speech following a stroke. The marriage is passionate, stormy and disillusioning. Disillusioning, too, is the discovery that life in country society is no more respectable than in London. Worse, at Dragonmede it is accompanied by sinister legend and fear, plus the shock of learning how her marriage was manipulated, and why. Caught up in a web of intrigue, jealousy- and mystery, Eustacia endures horror and the threat of death before she reaches ultimate happiness.
