Covenant, The Unbeliever. They were bestsellers in
Britain and America and praised as the ‘best novel
of the year’ by the British Fantasy Society. Stephen
Donaldson was given the John W. Campbell award
(as best new writer) by the 1979 British Science
Fiction Convention.
Donaldson was born in 1947 in Cleveland, Ohio.
From ages three to sixteen, he lived in India, where
his father, an orthopaedic surgeon, worked exten-
