WILDLIFE CRISIS
HR H The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and James Fisher
For as long as he has lived on this planet man
has plundered the earth’s resources for his
own purposes. Among the often unintended
victims have been some of the world’s most
beautiful and valued wild creatures. Many of
them are already extinct, and many more will
soon be, unless man takes concerted action
to save them.
In this book two notable authors speak out on
one of today’s most profound challenges.
Their challenging, informative collaboration,
with its magnificent illustrations – most of
them reproduced for the first time – provides
a unique introduction to the threatened world
of wildlife.
H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh tells how his
growing interest in bird watching made him
aware of the great need for wildlife conserva-
tion. He illustrates his account with his own
photographs, many of which have never’ been
published before. He has selected a superb
photographic record of ten years of bird
observation, ranging from Antarctica to the
Galapaqos Islands and to Lake Rudolf in
Kenya.
James Fisher, the distinguished naturalist, has
written a comprehensive and fascinating
history of the conservation movement around
the world beginning in prehistoric times. It is
the only document of its kind to be prepared
with the approval and assistance of the World
Wildlife Fund and the International Union for
the Conservation of Nature and Natural
Resources. This is an original, authentic
account, with an appraisal of each continent’s
participation in this vital concern.
A third section offers a well illustrated com-
pendium of the most notable species of animal
and bird life that have been affected by man’s
indifference, or by his interests. It is produced
in three colours: black representing those
species that have vanished forever, red those
that are currently threatened with extinction,
and green those that have been saved by
man’s efforts.
Eight maps, a bibliography and an index are
also included.
Among his many other activitles Prince Bernhard
(left) is founder of a fund for the Advancement of
Arts and Sciences in the Netherlands, and Chairman
of the European Cultural Foundation and Bildeberg
Conferences. A lifelong conservationist, he has been,
for the past nine years, President of the World
Wildlife Fund and a widely travelled participant in
its projects.
As Secretary of the Interior for Presidents Kennedy
and .Johnson, Stewart L Udall (right) did more than
any other one ‘man to make the American public
aware of environmental problems, and the vital need
for conservation. He is currently serving as Chairman
of ‘Overview, an international consulting group which
advises governments and industries on methods of
building a better environment.
Peter Scott is a painter, author, ornithologist and
explorer. He is involved with numerous organisations
devoted to the welfare and character training of the
rising generation, and the conservation of wildlife
and wilderness. In 1946 he founded the Wildfowl
Trust of which he is Honorary Director. He is also
Chairman of the British National Appeal of the
World Wildlife Fund.
