Description
‘Summerhill is the name of a small school, but it signifies a great experiment in education. In the forty years of its existence its founder has proved (despite much discouragement and revilement) one simple truth – freedom works. This book shows how and why. I place Neill with Pestalozzi and Caldwell Cook among the great reforming teachers, bringing light and love into places (the home as well as the school) where there was once tyranny and fear. Summerhill is a name that will never be forgotten in the annals of education.’ – Sir Herbert Read
Summerhill has been taken by A S Neill from four of his earlier books, and is now edited with new material. Its theme is simple. As A S Neill writes in his introduction: ‘All crimes, all hatreds, all wars can be reduced to unhappiness. This book is an attempt to show how unhappiness arises, how it ruins human lives, and how children can be reared so that much of this unhappiness will never arise.’
Paperback, 336 pages. In very good preloved condition with the exception of being ex-library. Protective cover.
