Description
Landscapes of
New Zealand
Rising out of the glittering waters of the
South Pacific is the land of fire and
snow that is New Zealand. The far north
enjoys an almost tropical climate,
where dense mangrove swamps line the
estuaries and bays, whUe further inland
the mighty kauri rise like giants into
the sky.
In Tongariro National Park the earth
vents its fury in the repeated eruptions
of the volcanoes. The underground
activity also results in the geothermal
activity of the Rotorua area, where the
most dramatic sights are the geysers
that shoot out of the ground to great
heights in scalding fountains.
South of Cook Strait lies the larger and
far more mountainous South Island.
Throughout the length of the island a
ridge of magnificent peaks climbs into
the sky. In the far southwest the
mountain scenery reaches its most
magnificent, as great mountains rise
sheer from the water’s edge to heights
of some 2,000 metres.
Reflected within these pages is the
majesty of New Zealand; one of the
most beautiful countries in the world
whose magical, ever changing
landscapes are a source of wonder for
all who visit or live in these islands.
