Description
From a childhood scarred by severe family problems and from an acting career which was initially overshadowed by her father’s success, Jane Fonda has risen to become America’s most controversial and one of the most successful film actresses of her time. Her parents separated when she was
eleven; her mother committed suicide the following year; her brother attempted suicide; and her father remarried several times. But Jane fought the problems of her early years with the resilience she has since manifested in every aspect of her life.
The early part of her career followed a reasonably conventional course until the late 1960s when she spent some time ill India and returned to the USA determined to become involved in the movement for social change. She extended vigorous support to the American Indians, the Black Panther Group, and the FTA group which was protesting against Vietnam. For years Jane Fonda’s every step was charted by the FBI until she was finally vindicated in 1974 by Nixon’s resignation – she had been one of the first to call for his impeachment in 1970.
In the most recent years of her career, in The China Syndrome and Coming Home, for example, she has managed to combine her two main interests – politics and entertainment – in some of the USA’s most commercially successful films. With her second husband, Tom Hayden, she has founded a company known as the Indochina Peace Campaign which produces films and finances political and social activities with the proceeds, as well as her body fitness salon in Beverly Hills.
Award-winning actress, politician, and now fitness expert, Jane Fonda still has many successful years before her, but Fred Lawrence Guiles has produced an extraordinarily engaging account of her life so far, setting her story against a richly detailed background of a country and a world in ferment. He has been given access to secret documents, critical family correspondence, and inter- viewed a number of her key directors, colleagues and family friends. The Jane Fonda he has revealed is more extraordinary than anyone would have guessed.
