Description
Since 1963 James Siers has been working on a series of pictorial colour volumes of the Pacific and New Zealand. This is his eighteenth publication, the fourth on New Zealand and its people. His other New Zealand works are New Zealand; The New Zealanders and New Zealand/Dramatic Landscape. He says he could never live long enough to exhaust the photographic qualities of the New Zealand countryside.
James Siers became intensely involved in the question of the origins of the Polynesian peoples to the point where he organised two canoe expeditions. The first voyage was completed successfully in 1976 in a Gilbertese outrigger canoe from Tarawa to Fiji, a distance of some 1,500 miles. The second voyage nearly ended in disaster when the outrigger beams linking the canoe to the hull were broken in a storm some 1,000 miles to the east of Fiji. Siers and six others, including his ten-year-old son, survived a sixteen-day liferaft drift before being picked up by a passing Chilean ship. The story of the two voyages is told in Taratai- A Pacific Adventure and Taratai II – A Continuing Adventure.
