Description
One of the special attractions of the great
game of golf is that the world’s top players
face the same challenges as the weekend
amateur. The problems confronted from tee
to green, whether they are an a,iling swing or
a disobedient putting stroke, confidence or
club selection, manifest themselves in
monthly medals just as they do in major
championships. Thus the amateur golfer can
sympathise with the superstar when things
go wrong, just as he or she can learn a lot
when everything is blooming.
Essentially what works for the masters is of
value to all golfers no matter what their
handicap. That is why Golf Tips From The
Stars, featuring personal golfing secrets
disclosed to Bill Elliott and Mitchell Platts by
one hundred of the world’s most successful
golfers, will benefit players at every level.
Read Seve on ways to perfect the backswing.
Listen to Greg Norman on the importance of
the grip when putting from long range and to
Nancy Lopez on how to make those short
putts drop. Find out the daily ritual which
helps keep Nick Faldo in the forefront of
international golf. In addition Jack Nicklaus,
Arnold Palmer and Gary Player, the ‘Big
Three’ who dramatically increased the
popularity of the game, provide pointers to
playing better. Tony Jacklin, Bernard
Gallacher and the late Sir Henry Cotton, all
Ryder Cup captains in their time, make their
contributions to this book, magnificently
illustrated by Paul Trevillion, which should
help golfers of all standards to improve
their game.
Bill Elliott joined the Daily Express in 1969
and first covered golf for the paper in
1975. Apart from a brief period spent on
Sportsweek magazine (now defunct) he has
been with Express Newspapers ever since
and currently writes about golf and other
sports for the Daily Star. He is also a regular
writer for Today’s Golfer magazine and is
author or co-author of several books on golf-
related subjects. He won the 1992 Magazine
Sportswriter of the Year award. Elliott, who
tries hard to play to a 12 handicap, lives in
Rowledge, Surrey, with his health visitor wife
Valerie and teenage sons Simon and James.
They are all Seve fans.
Mitchell Platts, former golf correspondent of
The Times, has played in Pro-Ams and
practice rounds with many of the superstars
of the game, including Seve Ballesteros,
Nick Faldo, Tony Jacklin, Sandy Lyle and top
American Betsy King. On 1 January 1993 he
took up a new position as Director of
Communications and Public Relations for the
PGA European Tour. He lives in
Buckinghamshire with his wife Hilary and
their children Charlotte and Elliott, and plays
golf at Ellesborough where he hopes with a
little help from this book to reduce his
handicap from 14 to single figures.
Paul Trevillion, a member of the Comedians
Golf Society, illustrated Peter AIIiss’ classic
best-seller Easier Golf. Written in 1970 it is
now in its tenth impression. Trevillion also
illustrated the Gary Player Golf Class which
appeared in over 300 papers – the largest
syndicated sports feature in the world.
Trevillion says, ‘The golf instructional tips
which I have illustrated for AIIiss, Player and
Trevino seem to have helped everybody
except myself. I play like all three and shoot
their combined scores, something in the
region of 290 a round – and I’m only half
joking!’ Trevillion lives in the beautiful
countryside of Hertfordshire, just a four
wood from a choice of golf courses.
